Trail braking is one of the highest-impact techniques you can master in Automobilista 2. Unlike simple threshold braking, trail braking extends your deceleration zone into corner entry, allowing you to carry more speed and hit the apex with precision. Here's exactly how to build this skill.

Understanding Trail Braking vs. Threshold Braking

Threshold braking means hitting maximum brake pressure in a straight line, then releasing completely before turning. Trail braking means maintaining some brake pressure while steering into the corner. This keeps the car settled and rotating, and crucially, lets you adjust your entry speed on the fly if you've misjudged the braking point.

In Automobilista 2, cars are heavy and have real inertia. You can't simply throw them at a corner and expect grip. Trail braking is your solution.

The Braking Point and Entry Sequence

Start with your baseline braking point—the marker where you began maximum braking in your previous attempts. Now, move that point 5-10 meters later down the track. Watch your steering angle trace simultaneously. If steering angle spikes while brake pressure is still high, you're asking the tires for too much at once. The front grip budget is limited—share it between braking and turning.

Throttle Control and Exit

The transition to throttle is just as critical as the braking transition. Release the brake fully before aggressive throttle application. A common mistake is trying to save a tenth by applying throttle while still braking. Automobilista 2 punishes this heavily—you'll either run wide or spin.

Instead, focus on when you can smoothly apply throttle without the car tightening its line. This usually happens 2-3 car-lengths after your apex, not at it. Early throttle application will drift your exit wide and cost you 3-4 tenths into the next straight.
